Jackson Family In Ontario
There were scores of different Jackson families that have settled in Ontario from many places, such as Ireland, England, Scotland, and the United States. Jackson families have been in Ontario since the time of the American Revolution. Some of the earliest families such as mine, had been soldiers in the British Army who were recruited in Ireland. After the close of the war they were discharged and granted land in Ontario. My family located in Augusta Township, which lies in Grenville County in eastern Ontario. Many other families had previously owned land in the United States and joined up with the British Army during the American Revolution. After the close of the war, they were granted land in Ontario, and many of them settled in the Kingston, Ontario vicinity. Many of these families who were Loyalists, can be traced back to places such as New York and Pennsylvania. This library relates to many of these different families, and I have joined many researchers to others who I found tracing the same families.
The three largest Jackson Family groups in Ontario are as follows
THE EDWARD JACKSON FAMILY - This is my family. Edward Jackson was born in Ireland in 1754. He enlisted into the 24th regiment of the British Army in 1775, under the command of General Simon Fraser. He was brought to Canada in 1776 with this regiment and fought in the Revolutionary War and participated in many battles such as the Battle Of Saratoga, in which General Simon Fraser was killed. After the close of the war, he was discharged in Montreal, and remained there until he located on his land in Augusta Twp., Grenville Co., Ontario in the 1780's. He married Mary Gadways in 1788 and started a family. There were nine children, John, Thomas, William, James, Elizabeth, Christopher, George, and two unidentified at this time. Edward celebrated his 100th birthday in October of 1854. He died at Augusta on March 9th, 1855. The descendants now are spread out all over North America, but some after over 200 years, remain in the vicinity of Augusta Twp. Large concentrations of descendants can be found in locations such as Leeds and Grenville Counties of Ontario, Frontenac County, Ontario, Lennox & Addington Counties, in Ontario, York County, Ontario , Lambton County, Ontario, and Ionia County, Michigan. My research has spanned over 25 years now, and I have written three history books on this family two of which are sold out. The First volume entitled, The History Of The George Jackson Family was printed in 1984, The second volume entitled, The Portrait And Biographical Record Of The Edward Jackson Family was printed in 1991. I have now completed the 3rd volume which is entitled, The History Of The Edward Jackson Family. The first publication, was centered on George Jackson (1803-1908), who was the son of Edward Jackson. The second volume centered on Edward Jackson, and his children, Thomas, Elizabeth, and George. The third volume has updated the previous volume and includes an extensive addition on the family of Christopher Stroud Jackson (1801-1876).
George Jackson
(1803-1908)
HENRY (HENDRICK) JACKSON FAMILY - This family are the descendants of Henry Jackson, Born abt. 1741, and his wife, Sarah Clute. There were 7 children, Jane, Rachael, James Elias, Peter, Henry, Sarah, and Aariantje. Henry was living in the State of New York prior to the American Revolution and was a soldier in the British Army. After the close of the War, Henry was granted land in Edwardsburgh, which lies in the county of Grenville, not far from Edward Jackson. This family can be easily confused with Edward's family because of the similarity in names, and that they followed the same migration patterns. Research has gone on for several years to connect these two families, without success. The family contact is Cathy Marie Earl. Cathy has been a very active Jackson researcher, and has exchanged information with me for many years. I met Cathy for the first time in Sarnia this past year in which we were able to have a very historic and informative meeting. Cathy has completed and printed her family history and it is now for sale. Cathy can be reached at the following links.
THE DESCENDANTS OF HENRY JACKSON (1606-1686)- This family who came to Ontario, are mainly descendants of Jethro Jackson who came to Canada in 1793 from Vermont. He married Zelicia Coggelshall. Zelitia Coggelshall was a direct descendnat of John Coggelshall, first president of Rhode Island. There were nine children, Zelicia, Joseph, Jethro, Jonathon, Nancy, Fanny, William, Lorraine, and Oren. Jethro was granted land first in Frontenac County, not far from Kingston, Ontario. This family can be traced back to New York, Vermont, and Connecticut. Large concentrations of family have been found in the Frontenac, and Lennox & Addington Counties in Ontario, along with and intermarried into the same families that the descendants of the Edward Jackson family. Having all three of the largest known Jackson families in this region of Ontario, can make research very complicated. Thanks to George Jackson of Orilla, Ontario, for compiling the main bulk of data on this family. George can be reached at the following link
