This page is dedicated to family history research in Italy with special emphasis of the families of Lupia, Schiavo, Fabiano, Talerico, Pettinato, Mussari, and  DePaola families that lived in Carlopoli, Catanzaro, Italy whose descendants migrated to Old Forge, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania .

Carlopoli is located in  the mountains of southern Italy in the Province of Catanzaro between the cities of Catanzaro and Cosenza. Many of the people who migrated from this area left from the port of Naples located on the west coast of Italy. From  there they came to New York City. Many passenger lists have been posted on the internet and can be searched.

FAMIGLIA LUPIA

The first known family member proved in this region was Angelo Lupia who was born in Scigliano, Provincia di Cosenza in 1743. He married and had many children one of which was Fedele Lupia, born at Scigliano in 1773. Angelo brought his family to Carlopoli, Provincia di Catanzaro not long afterwards. It was here that Fedele Lupia was united in marriage with Angela Maria Schiavo in 1796. There were many children ,one of which was Giuseppe who was born at Carlopoli in 1798. In 1844, he was united in marriage  with Giuseppina Mussari. She was born around 1812. At the time of their marriage, Giuseppe was 46 years of age, leading us to believe that he could have been married before and that his first wife may have died. New information uncovered recently is pointing to this possibility. Giuseppe and Giuseppina had several children, Angela Maria, Angela Rosa, Fedele Fortunato, and Carmine Antonio. Angela Rosa Lupia was born at Carlopoli, Catanzaro, Italy in 1847. She  married Salvatore Cimino  at Carlopoli in 1876. There were two children, Anna Rosa and Salvatore. Angela Rosa Cimino died at Carlopoli, Catanzaro, Italy in 1918. Anna Rosa Cimino married Palmerino Mussari and came to America and settled in Joliet, Il. Fedele Fortunato Lupia was born in Carlopoli, Catanzaro, Italy in 1849. In 1878, he was united in marriage with Maria Lisabetta Petinatto. There were four known children, Giuseppina, Giuseppe, Carolina (who died young), and Antonio. In 1888, Fedele came to America and settled in Old Forge, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania. He worked in the coal mines and raised money to eventually send for his family.. In 1892, his two sons, Giuseppe and Antonio came to Old Forge. In July of that same year, his wife, Maria Lisabetta died at Carlopoli. Giuseppina, went to live with her aunt, Angela Rosa. In 1900, Giuseppina was able to come to America to join her family. Soon after her arrival in Old Forge, she was united in marriage with Salvatore Talerico. Fedele first made his home with Gregorio Scaccia, also a native of Carlopoli.  In 1905, Giuseppe was united in marriage with Rosaria Fabiano. She was born in Carlopoli in 1882 and was the daughter of Filippo Fabiano and Carmella Pettinato. There were several children born to them, Philip, Maria Lisabetta (who died young), Antonio, Angelo, Salvatore, Giuseppe, Enrico, Maria Lisabetta, Giuseppina, Carmella, and Annie. This entire family lived at Old Forge, Lackawanna Co., Pa.

During the course of my research in Italy I was fortunate to come across one of the most valuble records to be found for a family that emigrated out of the country. This document exists for many families and is known as the certificato di stato di familia. This is otherwise known as the certificate of family status. These documents can be found in the Ufficio Anagrafe in the town where the family lived. In the case of my family in Carlopoli, I addressed my letter to the Ufficio Anagrafe, Carlopoli, Catanzaro, Italy 88040. I was also able to obtain many vital records from the Ufficio Dello Stato Civile.  In the case of Fedele Lupia who came to America in 1888, I was able to locate his certificato di stato di familia. As you will see below, this document provided me with  the birth date of Fedele, the maiden name and the birth date of his wife, the date of death of his wife, the names of both of their parents including the mother's maiden name, and the names and birth dates of all of their children. This amounts to three generations of information which proves to be a very valuable record to the genealogist. I was also able to find other similar documents for other families in the vicinity of Carlopoli
