Famiglia Lupia Continued

Giuseppe Lupia
Giuseppe Lupia and Rosaria Fabiano moved from Old Forge to Carbondale, Lackawana Co., Pa by 1910 according to the 1910 U.S. federal census of Lackawanna County, Pa. By the year 1920, the family is back in Old Forge, Lackawanna County. Giuseppe's father, Fedele and brother Antonio appeared to have died sometime between 1900 and 1910. Many of Giuseppe's sons found work in the local mines in the vicinity of old Forge. In the early years Fedele Lupia lived with Gregorio Scaccia. Gregorio's son Charles, married Palma Fabiano and Giuseppe's son married Palma's sister, Rosaria Fabiano. I made many trips to Old Forge to visit relatives and meet new ones. Mary Scaccia was the daughter of Charles Scaccia and Palma Fabiano of Old forge and was my grandfather's cousin. She welcomed us into her home and gave me some pictures and lead me to more connections to other family. It was not until I was researching the history did I discover that these families knew each other in Italy before they arrived in Old Forge and that is what inspired me to name the book I published on the family history " From Italy To Old Forge." My grandfather, Salvatore Lupia was born in Old Forge in 1912. He grew up in this area and worked in the coal mines when he was young. He married my grandmother in 1934. In 1935, he moved to Duryea, Luzerne Co., Pa. and continued to work in the coal mines until 1944. In 1952 he came to Ohio and found work in a factory until 1959. It was in 1959 that he opened an Italian American delicatessen next door to his home. He sold many fine imported Italian foods and my grandmother made fresh Italian sausage for the store. The business eventually turned into a pizza shop which became known as Lupia's Pizza where me and my 2 uncles worked and was where our background in the baking industry was born and all of us have continued in this trade until the present. Salvatore then turned the pizza shop into a restaurant until 1975 when he retired and sold the business. Salvatore was a guitar and mandolin player and some of my fondest childhood memories were in the pizza shop on Saturday night when a few of his Italian friends would come to the shop with their music instruments where they would play many tunes over the course of a couple of hours. My grandfather was well known and well respected in the community where he lived and worked. Salvatore Lupia kept busy all the time throughout his retirement until his death in 1994.

RESEARCH CONTINUES IN ITALY
CARLOPOLI, CATANZARO, ITALY
Records of other Lupia families have been discovered in the nearby towns of Parenti, Sersale and Colosimi. The name has been in the province of Calabria for centuries and most likely originated at Scigliano where some of the earliest records of the name have been found. There are 9 hamlets that make up the frazione of Scigliano, one being called Lupia.

It is now believed that many of these families are connected given the close proximity of the towns and the similarity of names among the different families. Many of these families emigrated to the United States. Anyone wishing to share or exchange information is encouraged to contact the webmaster.
