Harold B. Jackson 33rd Degree Mason
( 1904-1987 )
Harold. B. Jackson was born at Lake Odessa, Michigan on April 13th, 1904. He was the son of Henry Alexander Jackson and Agnes Lucinda Carr. Around 1905, his parents moved to Mecosta County and lived near Remus, Michigan. He attended a little country schoolhouse known as the Titus School until he was in the eighth grade. He then moved to Owosso and lived with his brother Frank and attended two more years of school. From there he moved to Big Rapids, Michigan and finished his last two years of high school. After high school he went on to the Ferris Institute of Business for two more years. They placed him in a job with a lumber company in Montana. It was there in 1926 that he married Leona Lucille Evans. After living in Montana for three years, he moved to Hammond, Indiana, where he went to work for the Hammond Lumber Company, for whom he worked for 40 years to the day. Retiring in 1968, he moved with his wife to Spencer, Indiana where he had a small orchard and a big garden to keep him active. As a 33rd degree Mason, Harold Jackson reached the highest degree in masonry, and his other titles and memberships included Ancient Accepted Rite Valley of South Bend, Past Master of McKinley Lodge No. 712 F. & A.M. at Schereville, honorary memberships in Clay Lodge and No. 85, and Spencer Lodge No. 95, Hammond Council No. 90 Royal and Select Masters, Order of the Eastern Star Hammond Chapter No. 370, Hammond Commandery No. 41, Lake County Cryptic Masonry Association, Banks of the Wabash York Rite College No. 72 of Terre Haute, Royal Arch Masons, Hammond No. 117, and Association of Actual Past Masters of Spencer. Harold and Lucille celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1976. I took my family to Spencer in 1984 and we spent a week with Harold and Lucille while my first history book was being published in Evansville and we had a great visit while I traveled back and forth to Evansville on business concerning the book. His home served as a home base for me and we had the opportunity to meet other relatives while on the trip. Harold B. Jackson died at Spencer, Indiana on March 10th, 1987.
My Masonic Heritage
Many members of the Jackson family have been members of the
Masonic Lodge. Edward Jackson (1754-1855) served in the King's 8th Regiment of
foot of the British Army during the Revolutionary War and was stationed for some
time at Niagara On The Lake, not far from where the first Masonic Lodge in
Upper Canada was founded by members of this regiment who were stationed here from
1773-1785. After the close of the war, Edward Jackson settled in what is now
known as eastern Ontario. Ziba Phillips was affiliated as Past Master at New
Oswegatchie in 1788 and installed as Master in 1789. Edward Jackson also served
in the War of 1812 with Ziba Phillips Jr. ( 1787-1847 ). Ziba Phillips Jr.
became Master of the Jarvis Chapter of the Masonic Lodge founded at Augusta,
Canada in 1815. Many members of the Jackson family have been members of the
lodge, both in Canada and the United States. I am also a Mason and have served
as an officer in the Blue Lodge, and hold membership in the Royal Arch Masons
and have obtained all of the Degrees in the York Rite.
